Reflexology is a form of complimentary treatment that focuses on applying pressure to specific points on the feet that represent different organs in the body and allow the body to heal itself. This treatment greatly contributes to the holistic care provided to palliative care patients and has improved on their quality of life.
Reflexology continues to be provided and a minimum of five patients are seen every week coming up to 20 patients per month and 240 patients per year.
Reflexology services started in 2001 at Hospice Africa Uganda by a team of reflexologists under the Reflexology Outreach international (ROI) from the UK. The team trained a number of staff and volunteers and others went through further training to become trainers.
Margaret Hassanan Nakake as one of the volunteers as well as Hospice Patients has continued to provide the services to the patients during day-care every Tuesday with the support of Maureen Lwanga who has recently been trained. The coordination of reflexology has continued with the Occupational Therapist as the support coordinator.
Betsy Keating a reflexologist from the Pendel side Hospice in the UK has dedicated her services and time to support the Hospice reflexologists with; aromatherapy oils, financial funding for transport, new skills and resources in form of books on reflexology and how best it can be used in palliative care. She is greatly appreciated and commended for the good work.
