Message from the CED

Our Mission is to support affordable, suitable and accessible Palliative care to those in need in Uganda and other African countries.

Hospice Africa Uganda is an NGO that is committed to providing palliative care to those in Uganda and other African countries.  It is our will and conviction that the integration of palliative care into the continuum of care is a real necessity for reducing pain and suffering.  This will improve the quality of life among the sick and restore hope.  To date Hospice Africa Uganda has cared for more than 13,000 patients.

Fifteen years ago when Hospice Africa Uganda commenced, there were three in the team and finances available for three months.  Hospice Africa has grown since then to 112 team members working in the three branches providing care and training. We are seen as a model service for the rest of Africa and we are recognised nationally and internationally as a leader in providing quality palliative care to those in need.  Hospice Africa is a unique organisation because the focus of our work is the patient and the family.  Effective caring requires above all, the team members who are deeply in sympathy with the ethos of palliative care and have the knowledge and skills to deliver it.

It is through advocating to the Government of Uganda that Uganda  is the first country to make palliative care an essential clinical service for all (under HIV/AIDS),in the Health Sector Strategic Plans 2000 and 2006.  Uganda is also the first country to change the statute so Nurses and Clinical Officers with 9 months training from Hospice Africa Uganda can prescribe morphine.

Now Hospice Africa Uganda in the next five years will concentrate its efforts in five areas:

Palliative care excellence - We will provide access to comprehensive quality palliative care to people living with HIV/AIDS and Cancer and their families;

Palliative care education - We will provide stakeholders across the continuum of care with the knowledge, skills and abilities to integrate palliative care into their activities;

Palliative care advocacy - We will establish an effective advocacy programme for palliative care in Uganda and sub-Saharan Africa,

Knowledge building - We will establish a knowledge-building practice for Hospice Africa Uganda that informs the acquisition and dissemination of information within and outside HAU.

Organisational strength - We will strengthen the organizational efficiency and effectiveness in the face of both growth and change.

Palliative care is not yet readily available to all who need it and Hospice Africa can not offer this service alone.  HAU therefore collaborates with a number of organizations and individuals to deliver palliative care services to a number of stakeholders.  It is through the existing and new organizations, HAU will continue to influence policy processes at all levels.

We are here to improve the quality of lives of our patients and their families facing life-threatening illnesses.

I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to our friends, donors, partners, volunteers, team members who are working tirelessly to support the work we are doing.  It is my humble request to ask those of you who share our mission, to please support Hospice Africa Uganda since there is still a fundamental need.
